Muller Glen Trail: New Bog Bridges Make For An Easier Walk

David Cummings, Molly Markey, Stephen O’Leary, Andrea and Jim Tracey, and Rob Truslow formed an intrepid crew of rank amateurs who gathered Saturday for trail maintenance at Mary Cummings Park. Specifically, we intended to complete several bog bridges, work that had been started by the Appalachian Mountain Club a few weeks before.

The first order of business was to haul the six remaining logs, located just inside the park at the Muller Road trailhead, the quarter mile into the boggy area near the old ice pond.
Even armed with two 2-wheelers and a 4-wheel cart it took a couple of arduous trips to ferry the heavy logs to the staging area. Fortunately the hot weather had dried up much of the standing water from the wet spring weather so the area was not a complete quagmire. On the down side, our tender flesh provided a welcome feast to hordes of mosquitoes.
Privately each of us had feared the job would take forever, driving us to exhaustion. To our pleasant surprise, once to logs and lumber had been brought to the site, building the bridges did not take long at all. The work went quickly with many hands pitching in to share the load. We felt a satisfying sense of accomplishment as we gathered up tools and gear to head home again, having enjoyed each other’s company and working together.
